Both Britain and France declared war on Germany since Hitler invaded both allies including Poland in 1939. The Germans was not the first casuality of that declaration. When the British ocean liner "Athenia" was sunk by the Germans because they only thought it was armed and belligerent. About 1,100 passengers were on board some of those passengers lost their lives of the sinking and only 28 of the passengers were americans. When the British responded to the incident it was initally no more than the dropping of anti-nazi propaganda leaflets almost 13 tons on Germany. The British plan to bomb the german ships on September 4 suffering significant losses. The French would plan to start an offensive against the german's western border in about two weeks later.

Almost 400,000 british and french soliders were trapped by the German offensive. A few days later, France was invaded by Italy who entered the war along side of Germany. The Germans began to plan an invasion fleet on the French Coast. Germany launched an air war because the naval power couldn't compete with that of Britain. The Luftwaffe started creating bombing runs over Britain, the goal was to try and gain total control of the skies by damaging RAF "Britain's Royal Air Force." The German bombers still continued to destroy Britain's cities they were trying to disrupt the production and to also break the civilian morate. So when the Germans bombed Britain cities, the British decided to get revenge by thier pilots bombing the German cities. The RAF destroyed over 185 German planes but at the same time they lost only 26 aircrafts on September 15, 1940.

When the Gremans arrived at the French coast, they went back north again and joined forces with the Greman troops in the city of Belgium. On May 26, 1940 the Germans went and trapped the allied forces around the northern part of Lille which is a city in France. France's effort soon began to weakened by a 90-mile narrow window leading to the Greman front that was being enclosed by the borders of Luxembourg and Belgium.
