In late April of 1945, the soviets surrounded the city Berlin. Hitler's body was found near his Berlin bunker on May 2 . He commited suicide so Berlin had to surrender on that same day. The war in Europe was over after nearly six years of a bloody battle. When Germany had surrenderd on May 7, the next day was proclaimed V-E Day which stand for Victory In Europe Day. Before Hitler died he rubbed oil on Admiral Karl Donitz as his successor to continue the fight. The Germans surrendered to Marshall Montgomery a British field. On the day of May 6, Karl Donitz informed General Alfred Jodl to "conclude an armistice agreement" with General Eisenhower. The Germans wanted isolated peace with the allied troops up in the west so they could continue their battle with the Russians.

When the Rheims surrendered, the Soviets had witnessed it but they didn't notice the surrender until another document was signed in the Soviet-conquered territory.
